From Latin Valentinus, a diminutive: for the etymology, see Valerius. ‘Valentinus,’ says Charlotte Yonge, ‘was a Roman priest, who is said to have endeavoured to give a Christian signification to the old (pagan) custom of drawing lots in favour of Juno Februata, and thus fixed his own name and festival’—‘Benedictines’ categorically denies this—‘to the curious fashion prevailing all over England’ (but now general only in rural districts) ‘of either the choice of a “true Valentine”, or of receiving as such the first person of the opposite sex encountered in that morning’ (February the 14th). It is now also a surname.
