A male name. the name of a famous family which derived its name from Ver in Normandy, The de Vere Earldom of Oxford became extinct in the 17th C, but Lady Diana de Vere, the heiress of the last earl, m. the 1st Duke of St Albans, and their 3rd s. was named Vere Beauclerk (later Lord Vere of Hanworth). This is the earliest example noted of the use of Vere as a christian name. Like other similar names, it is now often used by persons with no connexion with the family.
M. An aristocratic name, probably direct from the de Vere’s: cf. ‘Vere de Vere’. As a surname, Vere, originally French, may derive, not from Latin verus but from French vair: cf. the aristocratic Grey. Charles Montague, Lord Halifax, wrote in 1703, as a toast to the Duchess of St. Albans : The line of Vere, so long renown’d in arms, Concludes with lustre in St. Alban’s charms.
