A male name. Latin victor ‘conqueror’, the name of an early pope and of several martyrs. Victor is found in Curia Regis Rolfs of 1200 and 1203 and a single example has been noted in 1585, but its use in the Middle Ages was evidently rare, and its modern use in France seems to date from the Revolution. In England it came into general use in the later half of the 19th C, being regarded, probably, as a m. form of Victoria.

Latin ‘victorious’, ‘the conqueror’ (cf. Vincent, q. v.), from vincere, to defeat; Cicero speaks of victor omnium gentium, a world-conqueror, and the term was applied as an epithet to Jupiter and Hercules. This splendid name, which has appealed as much to the religious as to the worldly, was rarely bestowed outside of Italy until the French Revolution, when Victor became fashionable in France (Victor Hugo, the greatest French lyrist, was born in 1802); thence it passed to England. It has been optimistically attached to three Italian kings (Victor Emmanuel), three Italian dukes (Victor Amadeus, likewise ‘serving two gods’), three popes and two antipopes, three canonized bishops, thirty-five saints in all (Benedictines), and others, less famous perhaps but hardly less deserving; among these is the Roman historian (C4 A. D.). As a name, it goes from strength to strength, by warlike to peaceable victory. But if the schools speak of a victor ludorum (perhaps on the analogy of victor bellorum), why do they not have also a victor studiorum?
