A male name. Latin Vincentius, derivative of vincens ‘conquering’. There was a 3rd-C martyr of this name at Zaragoza, whose cult was fairly extensive; and the name is found in England from the 13th C, giving rise to the surnames Vincent, Vince, Vincey. Later the fame of St Vincent Ferrer, a 15th-C Spanish Dominican, and particularly of St Vincent de Paul, the 17th-C French founder of the Vincentian Order of the Sisters of Charity, increased its use in Roman Catholic countries. It also became fairly common in England in the 19th C.
