Now very aristocratic and somewhat rare, this is the name (canonized as Walburga) of ‘one of the English nun princesses in Germany’, daughter of ‘a Saxon prince in Wessex’. Dying, in 776, as Abbess of Heidenheim, she ‘strangely became connected with the witches’ sabbath’ and ‘patroness of the celebrated Valpurgisnicht’ (see Goethe’s Faust, Part I). Yonge; Benedictines.
