Winifred Forename Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A female name. Welsh Gwenfrewi, probably the same as Gwenhwyvar (see Gwenevere) ‘white wave’. St Gwenfrewi was said to be a Welsh princess martyred by Caradoc, and her well was and still is regarded as a miraculous one. The name was early anglicized as Winifred, and was sometimes confused with the Old English man’s name Winfrith. It has not been noted in use in England until the 16th C, and then usually with a Welsh connexion; Wynifreed occurs in 1585, Winefred 1631, Winfrith 1646, Winnifred 1704, Winefred 1742. It is now often abbreviated to Winnie and sometimes to Freda.
WINIFRID. Earlier Wenefrede, -fride, it means, in Celtic ‘white wave or stream’, and is therefore a doublet of Wanders (q. v.). Generally it is regarded as typically English, but, in 1794, Mrs. A. m. Bennett in her novel, Ellen, could, of a girl so named, write that it ‘had such a welchy vulgar sound, she chose to be called Maria’ (O. E. D.). It has some interesting forms: the English Jennifer, the Breton Jenovefa, the French Geneviève, the Russian Zenevieva (Yonge).
A female name, which some consider a Saxon compound signifying ‘get peace;’ it comes rather from the Old German win-frid, beloved protector.
Teutonic (feminine) - Peace-winner, or Lover of peace.
A Teutonic name, meaning: Friend of peace.
