ZILLAH. In Hebrew, ‘shadow,’ Zillah (the correct, more usual form) was the name of one of Biblical Lamech’s two wives; in C19-20, it has been almost confined to Gypsy women. (Yonge.) YOE, f. There are two Saints so named; one a Roman lady cruelly done to death late in C3 (Benedictines). Its radical (‘life’) is Greek and at the base of such words as zoology. As a proper name, it arose thus:—“‘The mother of all living” (Eve) received from the lips of Adam a name signifying life, sounding in the original like Chavva... It was not copied by any of her daughters for a long time, and when first the Alexandrian Jews came on it in their translation, they rendered it by Zoe..., in order to show that connexion of the name with the prophecy,’ Yonge.
