Historical Description

ST. ANDREW is an inland parish towards the south of the island. The church of St. Andrew, 2 ¼ miles south-west from the town church, St. Peter Port, and consecrated in 1284, is an edifice of French granite in the Norman style, consisting of nave, north aisle and a tower with low pyramidal spire: a new organ was provided in 1902, in memory of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, at a cost of £320: there is also a new font, a replica of one at Christ Church, Oxford: the church was restored in 1884, at a cost of £1,700, and affords 340 sittings. The register dates from the year 1575. living is a rectory, net yearly value £160, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1881 by the Rev. James Ughtred Pilbeam, who is an inspector of schools for the island. There is a French Congregational chapel erected in 1814, with 200 sittings, and a Wesleyan chapel In the parish, at the intersection of four roads, is a fragment of stone known as “Bailiff’s Cross,” with which a legend is connected. The land is in the hands of numerous small holders. The soil is a strong loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are tomatoes, grapes and wheat. The population in 1901 was 1,552, including 13 in Naftiaux Arsenal. The area is 1,203 acres; capital value, £290,400.
