Historical Description

ST. SAMPSON is a parish in the northern part of the island, but extending southwards along the shore of Belle Greve bay, and on the north-west to the bay of Grand Havre, 3 miles north-east from St. Peter Port. The harbour, covering an area of 22 acres, is 1,900 feet in length and 500 wide, and is protected by a granite breakwater, commenced by Daniel de Lisle Brock, bailiff in 1842. Another breakwater was added in 1903. A sea wall is now (1903) being constructed and will extend from Spur Point to Hougue-a-la-Peree. About 200,000 tons of granite are exported annually from this port. An electric tramway runs from St. Peter Port, along the margin of Belle Greve bay, to St. Sampson’s harbour, and is owned by the Guernsey Railway Co. Limited. The church of St. Sampson, consecrated in 111, and the most ancient church, in the island, is an edifice of stone, chiefly Norman, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles: the east window is stained: in the wall of the north aisle are several recessed arches enclosing ancient tombs, and in the baptistery is a very handsome font, the gift of the Rev. John Doyle Kennedy, a former rector (1869-80), and a memorial brass to the Rev. Frederick Henry Snow Pendleton, rector (1880-88): the communion plate includes a silver-gilt chalice of the 14th century: the church has about 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1714 only, the previous records having been lost. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £250, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Robert Jones, There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, a Bible Christian chapel at L’Islet, and places of worship for Plymouth Brethren and the Salvation Army, who have two halls in this parish. In the parish, on a rocky mount, not far from the shore of Belle Greve bay, are the ruins of la Chateau des Marcus, better known to visitors as” Ivy Castle,” and traditionally said to have been built by one of the Dukes of Normandy; the outer wall, surrounded by a fosse, is all that now remains: fragments or haies of the outer walls of the priory of St. Thomas D’Annoville also exist. Le Bordage Arsenal, situated at Baubigny, is used by the Militia for drilling purposes. Near the harbour, in Delancey park, is the De Saumarez monument, a granite obelisk 99 feet in height, erected in 1876 to the memory of Admiral Lord De Saumarez, a naval hero of Lord Nelson's time, who died 9 Oct. 1836. At the Warren is a bicycle track, where the annual races are held. The land is divided into small holdings of from about 5 to 50 vergees (2 ½ vergees equal one acre). The soil generally is light and sandy along the coast, but inland is a strong loam; subsoil, rocky. The chief crops are tomatoes, grapes and early produce for the London market. The population in 1901 was 5,573, including 41 on board vessels. The area is 1,435 acres; capital value, £383,450.
