Historical Description

ST. SAVIOUR is a parish in the south-west part of tha island, extending northwards to Perrello bay. The church, of St. Saviour, situated 4 miles west-by-south from St. Peter Port, was consecrated in 1154, and is an edifice of granite originally Norman, but since altered or rebuilt, and consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and an embattled western tower with short spire; the ancient font was removed from the church of St. Peter Port in 1887: the church was restored in 1874-6, and 1888-92, at a cost of £1,072, and affords 540 sittings. The register dates, from the year 1582. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £116, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Isaac Henry Bibby B.A, of Christ's College, Cambridge. In the parish is a Wesleyan chapel rebuilt an 1901; a French Congregational chapel, founded in, 1803, with 200 sittings, and a Baptist chapel, erected in 1829, seating 256. About a quarter of a mile from the shore of Perrelle bay rare the remains of the chapel of St. Apolline, formerly known as Ste. Marie de la Perrelle, and a license to build which was granted by Richard II. in 1394: the chapel as at present existing is a rectangular structure with square-headed windows, and a plain vaulted roof of stone. Richmond Barracks, on a small headland of Perrelle bay, are now (1903) unoccupied. The holdings of land are all small. The soil is stiff loam; subsoil, granite. The chief crops are early fruit (grapes and tomatoes). The population in 1901 was 1,062. Area, 1754 acres; capital value, £202,600.
