Historical Description

GROUVILLE with part of Gorey is a parish on the south-east part of the island, about 3 miles east from St. Helier, and has a station, half a mile from the church, on the Jersey Eastern railway. The parish lies on the east coast on a shallow bay extending northward from Plate Rocque to a short distance north of Gorey village, or about 2 ¾ miles. There are several Martelio towers along the coast. A harbour was constructed at La Rocque point in 1872. The Brookvale stream rises near Prince’s tower and flows through the parish. The church of St. Martin, built in 1322, consists of chancel, nave, aisles and a plain tower containing one bell: at the end of the north aisle there is a fine stained window given by Mr. De Carteret Bisson. The register dates from the year 1650. The living is a rectory with the chapelry of La Rocque annexed, net yearly value £100, in the gift of the Crown; Rev. F. D. Mote is curate in charge. There is an English Wesleyan chapel, La Rocque French Wesleyan chapel and Salem French Wesleyan chapel. The Jersey Female Orphan Home, in this parish, was opened in 1861 for 15 inmates, and has since been greatly enlarged at a cost of £5,000; the present number of inmates is 137. Fort Henry, in this parish, between the railway and the sea, is at present unoccupied. At the north-western extremity of the parish stands Houge-Hambrye or the Prince’s tower, built by Phillippe d’Auvergne, Duc de Bouillon, on the ruins of an ancient chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Houge-Hambrye: the tower is an embattled structure, with traceried windows, and is now overgrown with ivy and almost concealed by the dense growth of trees around it. La Rocque is at the extreme south' of the parish, and has a station on the Jersey Eastern railway. St. Peter's chapel of ease is an edifice of granite, built in 1851 at a cost of £500: the Rev. F. D. Mote is the chaplain. Dr. Barnardo’s Home for Boys, erected in 1885, near Gorey, has now (1903) 122 inmates; Rev. H. and Mrs. Hagell, superintendents. The principal landowners are W. Pemberton Wright, Charles E. Bertram and Mark Frederick Le Gallais esqrs. The soil is sandy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are potatoes and fruit. The area of the parish is 1,935 acres; rateable value, £380,840; the population in 1901 was 2,313 in the civil and 1,884 in the ecclesiastical parish.
