Historical Description

ST. CLEMENT is a parish in the south-east part of the island, extending along a bay of the same name, about 2 miles across from Le Nez Point to Plat Roque Point. The parish is traversed by the Jersey railway, which has stations at Pontac, Le Hocq, Samares and Georgetown. The church of St. Clement, built in 1117, is a cruciform structure of granite, originally Norman, but now chiefly in the Decorated style, and consists of chancel with north aisle, nave, transepts and a tower with pyramidal spire, containing one bell: the ancient font of granite, dating from the 13th century, is richly carved: the church was restored in 1882 at a cost of £1,880, when some wall paintings of the 15th century were discovered: in the churchyard is a sculptured tomb of white marble to the Labey family. The register dates from the year 1623. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £147, including 4 ½ acres of glebe land, in, the gift of the Crown, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Charles Walter Balleine. There are also Wesleyan and Calvinistic chapels in the parish, and a French Congregational chapel, erected in 1828, with 200 sittings. The Parish Hall, which stands near the church, is of stone, and was built in 1886 at a cost of £800. In this parish are Druidical remains, known as Le Montube (“Mount Tubal”), and consisting of 29 upright monoliths: there also is a lighthouse to direct ships into St. Helier harbour. Samares Manor House, the seat of Edouard Mourant esq. is situated in a valley, and has extensive and well-wooded pleasure grounds. Near and belonging to the house is an ancient chapel, a plain edifice of granite with a roof supported On two columns. The area is 1,044 acres; capital value, £270,180; the population in 1901 was 1,508 in the civil and 1,221 in the ecclesiastical parish.
