Historical Description

ST. JOHN is a parish in the northern part of the island, the coast Jane extending from. Giffard hay on the east to Les Mouriers on the west, including several small bays and also Sorel Point, the most, northern point of the island. St. John’s church, built in 1204, is an edifice of granite in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisle and a central tower with spire: the church plate includes some pieces dating from 1500: there are 532 sittings. The register dates from the year 1594. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £98, with two acres of glebe, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Ernest St. John Nicolle. Here is an English Congregational chapel, built in 1809, with 300 sittings, and a French Congregational chapel, erected in 1900, seating 120, also a Wesleyan chapel. Near Bonne Nuit bay in this parish are the Mont Mado quarries, from which a pink granite of great hardness is obtained, and near Sorel Point are quarries of blue granite (diorite). The Barracks here are now (1903) unoccupied. La Hougue Boete is an old manor house in the Italian style, standing in fine pleasure grounds, and is now the residence of Philip Le Brocq esq. Thomas Venables esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Thomas Venables esq: and the Le Gallais and Falla’ families. The soil is heavy soil; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are potatoes and fruit. The area is 2,154 acres; the population in 1901 was 1,620.
