Historical Description

ST. LAWRENCE is a parish in the central part of the island, extending southward to St. Aubin’s bay. The Jersey railway skirts the coast lino of the parish and has stations at Millbrook and Bel Royal. A mill brook flows through the parish, and the village of Millbrook will be found previously described. The church is miles north from Millbrook station on the Jersey railway, which skirts the coast, and 3 ¼ north-west from St. Helier. The church of St. Lawrence, consecrated in the year 1199, is an edifice of granite in the Norman style, and consists of chancel, nave and north aisle, but has no tower: the church was restored in 1891-4 at a cost of £4,000, and affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1550. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £115, with 5 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Adolphus Orange Balleine L.Th, of Durham University. The Parish Hall, which stands near the church, was built in 1882, at a cost of £3,000. There is a French Wesleyan chapel at Six Roads in this parish, and a French Congregational chapel, erected in 1900, with 60 sittings. In the north-eastern part of the parish is a china quarry. Avranche, the seat of Elie Philippe Marett esq. was built towards the end of the 18th century on the site of the old Manor house, and is surrounded by about 50 acres of well-appointed pleasure grounds. The manor has been in the family of Marett since the 13th century; part of the old building bears the following inscription:-“Omnia quae multo antememor provisa repones, site digna manet divina gloria ruris.” The principal landowners are Edward Voisin and Elie Philippe Marett esqrs. The soil is loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are early potatoes, fruit and root crops. The area is 2,337 acres of land; capital value, £462,880; the population in 1901 was 2,292, including 28 in Grove Private Asylum.

School Board Committee: The Constable, The Rector, F. D. Helleur, P. A. Le Cras, E. P. Marett, P. H. Malzard & J. G. Remon.
