Historical Description
ST. MARTIN parish occupies nearly the whole of the north-eastern portion of the island, with a very much indented coast line, extending from Rozel bay on the north to Gorey harbour on the south, and including St. Catherine’s bay and other inlets of lesser importance. At Verclut point, the northern limit of St. Catherine’s bay, a breakwater, 826 yards long, was erected in 1847 at a cost of £750,000, and at the seaward end is an octagonal lighthouse, the light being sixty feet above sea level: from Verclut head the French coast can be seen, and with a glass the houses are visible. The Les Vaux stream flows north of the church and falls into the bay. The church is about 2 miles north-west from Gorey terminal station on the Jersey Eastern railway and 4 north-east from St. Helier. The church of St. Martin, consecrated in 1116, is an edifice in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north transept, or Mabon’s chapel, and a central, tower with octagonal spire, 120 feet in height, and containing one bell: there are mural tablets to the Bandinel and Bertram families and to Dean La Couteur; the church was restored in 1877-8 at a cost of £3,000, and affords 800 sittings. The register dates from the year 1592. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £200, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1901 by the Rev. George Philip Balleine M.A. of Selwyn College, Cambridge. The Parochial Hall is near the church. There are Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels and a place of worship for the Salvation Army. Mont Orgueil Castle, built on a rocky eminence at the extreme point of a promontory on the south-east of the parish, immediately overlooks Gorey harbour and railway station, and affords from its ramparts, 310 feet above the sea level, a fine view of the French coast: the castle is a plain but massive structure of irregular outline, erected at different periods, but some portion of it claims to possess a considerable degree of antiquity: among the numerous apartments are rooms said to have been once occupied by Charles II. and there is also a very curious and nearly subterranean chapel, discovered in 1839, consisting of nave with a vaulted roof supported on columns 3 feet 10 inches in diameter: there is also a gatehouse with the remains of a portcullis and stone seats on each side: William Prynne, a member of parliament and political writer of the Stuart period, was imprisoned here about 1640, and in 1645 the Rev. La Cloche, for speaking against the governor, Sir G. de Carteret, was also imprisoned 11 months, and afterwards banished: David Bandinel, first dean of Jersey, and his son were also confined in the castle in the same year: the castle has stood many sieges, the first of which was by the French in 1339; an 1374 it was captured by the French, but was retaken by the English in 1467. Near Verclut point are quarries. St. Catherine’s tower is a Martello tower situated at the centre of the coast inclosing the bay. On the north of the parish is Saie, or Saix, harbour, near which are some Druidical remains, consisting of nineteen upright monoliths, and seven others supported by some of these; the apace inclosed is about 20 feet long by 5 feet wide. Near Anne Port, and close to Faldouet, stands a cromlech called “La Poquelaye;” it consists of an enormous monolith, 15 feet in length, 10 feet wide and 3 feet thick, resting on four others, but of no great height; a path fended with great stones leads up to it. R. R. Lempriere esq., Viscount of Jersey, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Reginald R. Lempriere and Philippe Richardson esqrs. The soil is sandy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are early potatoes and fruit. The area is 2,455 acres; capital value, £437,840; the population of the civil parish in 1901 was 2,748, including 50 on board H.M. Ship “Raven” and 116 in the Jersey Industrial School for boys, and 1,879 in the ecclesiastical parish.
About 5 miles out to sea off the coast of this parish are several rocky islets known as the Ecrehos. They are about two miles long, and rise from the centre of a reef, visible at low water and occupying an area of nine square miles. The Matre Ile, the largest of the group, rises to a height of 60 feet, and contains the ruins of a monastic house of the 13th century. On one of these islets is a rocking stone, nine feet long by two wide and weighing about ten tons.
