Historical Description

ST. MARY is a parish in the northern part of the island, on St. Mary's bay, which extends from. Sorel point on the east to Plemont point on the west, a distance of about three miles. A small and nameless stream rises near the church, and running south joins another at Gigoulande mill, and the confluent waters are eventually discharged into St. Aubin’s bay, near Beaumont. The hills near Greve de Lecq, one of which is called “Castel de Lecq,” slope almost to the strand, and are thickly and beautifully wooded. The church is 3 ½ miles north from Beaumont station on the Jersey railway and 5 ½ north-west from St. Helier. St. Mary’s church, consecrated in 1320, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, north porch and a square tower: the font is octagonal, massively executed in granite: there are three monumentas memorials: the church was restored in 1868 at a cost of £2,000, and has 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1648. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £135, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Sorel John Gruchy M.A. of Oxford University. Greve de Lecq, in this parish, is a quiet resort, and at the bay on the north-west is the Greve de Lecq hotel, built of wood, in the pavilion style, with stabling and other accessories, and close by it is a large Martello tower. Here also are barracks, occupied by the Highland Light Infantry Regiment. On the eastern side of the promontory at Greve de Lecq is Creux du Vis or Creux Terrible, generally known as” The Devil’s Hole,” a large cavity, or ravine, leading to a cavern communicating with the sea; steps are cut in places in the rock and a rope and handrail are provided to aid in the descent to the shore. In the parish are stone quarries. Messrs. John Arthur, John Collas, John O. De Gruchy and John A. Desreaux are the principal landowners. The soil is sandy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are potatoes and fruit. The area is 1,602 acres; capital value, £217,660; the population in 1901 was 934.

Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1901, at a cost of £1,800, for 100 children: average attendance, 75.
