Historical Description

ST. OUEN is a parish occupying the whole of the north-west part of the island, on the bay of its own name, which extends southward from Petit Etaqurel tower to Corbiere point in St. Brelade’s parish. From Plemont point, a rocky promontory 250 feet high, the whole of the northern coasts of the island, as well as the French coast, can be well seen. St. Ouen’s pond is a large piece of water, 20 acres in extent, on the southern boundary of the parish, partly in the parish of St. Peter, and is fed by a stream rising on Mont de la Mare: Mont Rosignol and Mont Matthieu, portions of the same range, are both in this parish. The church is 3 miles north from Don Bridge station on the Jersey railway and 6 ¼ north-west from St. Helier. The church of St. Ouen was built in the year 1130, is a structure, of granite in the Norman style, and consists of chancel with aisles, nave, aisles and a central tower with short pyramidal spire containing one bell: the pulpit is of Caen stone and marble: several of the windows are stained, the east window being a memorial to the de Cateret family, many of whom are buried in the church: the church was restored in 1870, when a, north entrance was added: in the course of the restoration the remains of Sir Philip do Cateret were discovered in a vault on the north side of the chancel: the church has 496 sittings. The register dates from the year 1634. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £235, with 12 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1891 by the Rev. John, Pepin M.A. of Jesus College, Oxford. St. George’s, built in 1881 at a cost of £1,700, by Canon Clement, as a chapel of ease to St. Ouen, is an edifice of Jersey granite in the Gothic style, consisting of nave only: there are 150 sittings. There is also a Wesleyan chapel. In the parish is a racecourse, about a mile in length, and also a rifle range, used by the. Government. At the northern part of the parish, on the Plemont promontory, are caves, and near these, on the Greve au Lancon, the telegraph cable connecting Jersey with Guernsey and England, enters the sea. On the western part of the coast, off Les Landes, is the Pinnacle rock, an isolated mass of granite rising 200 feet above sea level, and at Grosnez point, more to the north, are the ruins of Grosnez Castle, now consisting only of a single arched gateway and a few fragments of walls. St. Ouen Manor House, the seat of Edouard Charles Malet de Cateret, consists of a large but rambling pile of buildings, part of which dates from the time of Henry VIII, Edouard Charles Malet de Cateret, Alfred Daniel Le Cornu and Henry Philippe d’Auvergne esqrs, are the principal landowners. The soil is sandy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are potatoes. The area is 3,707 acres; capital value, £40,220; the population in 1901 was 2,246.
