Historical Description

ST. The church of St. Peter, consecrated in 1167, is a building of granite in the Norman style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, separated from the nave by arcades, with cylindrical columns, and a square tower with spire 170 feet in height and containing 2 bells: the church was restored in 1886-8 at a cost of £3,750, and affords 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1640. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £120, with five acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1897 by the Rev. St. Peter's barracks, about 1 ½ miles south-west from the church, are large buildings intended for about 300 men, and at present (1903) occupied by two companies of the Highland Light Infantry. Col. C. P. Le Cornu C.B., A.D.C., F.S.A, of La Hague Manor, and Major G. W. H, Le Feuvre are the principal landowners. The soil is sandy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are early potatoes and fruit.
