Historical Description

ST. SAVIOUR is a parish in the eastern portion of the island, extending from St. Helier and entirely surrounded by other parishes, except on the south, where a very small portion extends to the shore of Samanes bay. The Grand Val stream and the Swiss Valley stream, rising near Beau Desert, both, flow through the parish. The church of St. Saviour, the largest in the island, was consecrated in 1154, and is an edifice of granite, originally Norman, but now chiefly in the Decorated style, and consisting of chancel, with parallel north aisle, double nave, north aisle, transepts, south porch and a lofty central embattled tower containing 5 bells: there are nine stained glass windows, one of which is a memorial to Major Bennett, and another to Richard Falle: the church was restored in 1841-2 at a cost of £1,000, and affords 1,000 sittings. From the churchyard, which is planted with conifers and shaded by large trees, a beautiful and extensive view of the town and harbour of St. Helier and the surrounding country is obtained. The register dates from the year 1542. The living is a rectory, net yearly value about £186, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Edward Luce M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford, and vice-dean of Jersey. The Parish. Hall, near the church, is a building of stone, erected in 1890 at a cost of £5,000. Here is a French Congregational chapel, erected in 1829, with 200 sittings, also a Wesleyan chapel. The Victoria Cottage Homes were erected in 1903, to commemorate the Jubilee of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, and are intended for aged poor persons, being British subjects, without reference to their religious belief, provided they are respectable and can show that they have sufficient means to maintain themselves in the said Hornes. Other conditions being equal, preference is to be given to applicants who are natives of Jersey, or who have resided for the longest time in the island. The Homes will accommodate 16 single men, and there are a certain number of cottages for couples. The site and half the amount was granted by the States and the remainder was provided by public subscription. The Jersey Lunatic Asylum in this parish, and 3 ½ miles from St. Helier, was built in 1868, at a cost of £18,000: it is a commodious and substantial edifice of granite, and will hold 200 patients; the present number of inmates is 177-68 males and 109 females. Government House, near St. Helier, the residence of the Lieutenant-Governor, Major-General Henry Bichard Abadie C.B. and also in this parish, is a modern mansion standing in the midst of very extensive and picturesque grounds. The principal landowners are Messrs. Philippe Jean Picot, Miss Falle and Mrs. Emma Bashford. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are early potatoes and fruit. The area is 2,296 acres; capital value, £678,580; the population in 1901 was 4,053 in the civil parish, including 190 persons in asylum, and 3,118 in the ecclesiastical parish.

New Schools, near the church, were built in 1898, at a cost of £3,000, for 260 children; average attendance, 55 boys, 59 girls & 42 infants.
