Historical Description

TRINITY is a parish on the north of the island extending to Bouley Bay, a considerable indentation, included between Tour de Rozel on the east and Vicard Point on the west. Holy Trinity church, situated nearly 4 miles north from Royal square, St. Helier, and consecrated in 1163, is an edifice of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, transept and a tower with pyramidal spire, the apex of which is 410 feet above sea level: the nave was rebuilt in 1864: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1580. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £150, including. 6 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Reginald Le Sueur M.A. of St. John's College, Oxford. Ebenezer Wesleyan chapel is in the north part of the parish; Augres Wesleyan chapel, in Trinity road, and Carmel Wesleyan chapel, near Rozel Bay: the service in all these chapels is conducted in French. Near Rozel Bay, in the parish, is a stone quarry. Near Bell Hogue Point, the northern extremity of the parish, is the Fontaine des Mittes, a mineral spring, which in former times bad a reputation for miraculous virtues. A Roman wall, near Rozel Bay, partly surrounds' the spot called “Cesar’s Camp.” The barracks here are now unoccupied. Trinity Manor House, at present (1903) unoccupied, is an ancient mansion, beautifully situated in the midst of a well-wooded park, and affording extensive views of the surrounding country. Graves Chapman Swan esq. who is lord of the manor, and the Dorey, Aubin and Messervy families are the principal landowners. The soil is heavy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are potatoes. The area is, 3,030 acres; capital value, £420,240; the population in 1901 was 1,969.
