Historical Description

The parish of Carmyllie lies seven miles from Forfar, and is four miles long and three broad, containing 212 houses and 892 inhabitants, viz. 418 males and 474 females; of whom 107 were returned as being employed in agriculture, and 121 in trade and manufacture. This parish is hilly and mountainous, and the soil is cold and damp, having a very extensive moss running through it; but of late a spirit of agriculture and improvement has changed the surface much and ameliorated it greatly.
