Historical Description

The parish of Glenisla lies at the foot of the Grampian hills, on the river Isla; six miles from Isla : it is nineteen miles in length, and two in breadth; containing : 395 houses and 996 inhabitants, viz. 468 males, and 528 females; of whom 144 were returned as being employed in agriculture, and 42 in trade and manufacture. This parish is a considerable strath, and most part of it is naked and poor.

Reeky Linn in this parish is one of the largest and most beautiful cascades in Scotland. The river Isla here darts over a precipice of upwards of sixty feet in height. Through the violence of the fall, the vapour is forced upward in the air like smoke, or, as the Scotch term it, Reek, from whence it has its name. For a considerable space along the course of the river, the rocks on each side rise one hundred feet, and the river itself in several places has been found thirty fathoms deep.

Here are the ruins of the two old castles of Forter and Newtown.
