Historical Description

Newtyle parish is situated on the road from Dundee to Meigle, three miles from the latter; it is two miles long, and one broad, and contains 224 houses, and 781 inhabitants, viz. 355 males, and 426 females; of whom 59 were returned as being chiefly employed in agriculture, and 104 in trade and manufacture, principally in that of weaving. On the south are the Sidlaw hills; but on the north it is flat, and is in general well cultivated.

Near the village, are the ruins of the Castle of Hatton, built in the year 1575 by Lawrence Lord Oiliphant, near which are the vestiges of the more ancient castle of Balcraig, and on the top of an eminence called Kinfurney’s hill, is a tower, which serves as a landmark.
