Historical Description

Dalgety parish is four miles long and three broad, and contains 196 houses and 890 inhabitants; viz. 414 males and 476 females; of whom 55 were returned as being employed in agriculture, and 22 in trade and manufacture. The surface of this parish is considerably varied with small hills, which rise from the water's edge; the soil inclines to a loamy clay, and is productive. The castle of Dinnybirsle, a seat of the earl of Moray, gives a picturesque appearance to this quarter. The coal and salt trade are carried on here to a considerable extent.
