Historical Description

The parish of Ely is about four miles and a half long, and one broad, and contains 135 houses, and 730 inhabitants, viz. 313 males, and 417 females; of whom 107 were returned as being employed in agriculture, and 344 in various trades and manufactures. The whole of this parish is enclosed, and mostly the property of Sir John Anstruther, who has an elegant residence here, called Ely House.

The town is a royal burgh, and enjoys all the privileges of one, excepting the choice of a member to sit in parliament, which it relinquished on account of the expence. It stands on a dry healthy spot, so near the sea that it washes the walls of some of the houses. Here is an excellent harbour, and the deepest water in the Frith of Forth, except Burntisland. Rubies of a brilliant lustre have been found near the shore, washed from the rocks.
