Historical Description

Libberton parish lies on the banks of the Clyde, four miles from Biggar. It is of a triangular shape, seven miles long and four broad, and containing 174 houses and 706 inhabitants, viz. 322 males and 884 females; of whom 358 were returned as being employed in agriculture and 104 in trade and manufacture. The surface here is various; on the banks of the Clyde, the soil is deep and fertile, owing to the inundations of the river. Towards the east the country rises. The Quothquon hill is the highest ground, and appears in ancient times to have been fortified; around the village likewise the vestiges of fortifications, and many tumuli are visible.
