Historical Description

The parish of Forres stretches southward from the bay of Findhorn, in Kinloss, to Rafford. It is four miles long and two broad, and contains 691 houses, and 3,114 inhabitants, viz. 1274 males, and 1840 females; of whom 364 were returned as being employed chiefly in agriculture, and 380 in trade and manufacture.

The town of Forres is situated near the middle of the parish; it is a royal borough, and unites with Fortrose, Inverness, and Nairn, in electing a member to serve in parliament. The houses are neatly built, and the river Findhorn, which is navigable within two miles of the town, abounds with salmon. The borough is governed by a provost, two bailies, and a dean of the guild.

On a hill west of the town are the poor remains of the castle, from whence is a fine view of a rich country, interspersed with groves; of the bay of Findhorn; and a melancholy prospect of the estate of Cobin, row nearly overwhelmed with sand.
