Historical Description

Westray lies 20 miles north from Kirkwall, being between nine and ten miles in length, and from one to two in breadth. The coast is rocky, and has only one safe harbour on the northwest side of the island called Pyra Wall. At the head of the bay, which forms the harbour, stands a stately Gothic rum, called the castle of Noltland, but it was never finished: it is supposed to have been intended as a place of retreat for Queen Mary and Bothwell. Westray is also the name of a parochial district of the Orkneys, comprehending the isles of Westray and Papa Westray; the whole containing 232 houses and 1624 inhabitants.

The coast is rocky, and it has only one safe harbour, which is situated on the northwest side of the island, and is called Pyra Wall. At the head of the bay, which forms the harbour, stands a stately Gothic ruin, called Noltland castle, but it was never finished; it is said to have been begun by Gilbert Balfour to receive earl Bothwell, after he married Queen Mary; the lofty hall is entire, but the great staircase is ruined. Over an upper chimney is a de faced pendent shield; the environs are the most pleasant and fruitful spot of the island. "Much sand has been blown hereabouts lately (says Mr. Gough), and tumuli both of stone and earth uncovered from 20 feet of it, containing, with mens' bones, those of animals, weapons, knives, beads, a metal spoon, and glass cup, and a gold ring round a thigh bone.
