Historical Description

The parish of Bowden is situated to the south of the Eildon hills, five miles from Selkirk; it is about six miles in length, and four and a half in breadth, and contains 208 houses and 829 inhabitants, viz. 403 males, and 426 females; of whom 59 were returned as being employed in various trades and manufacture, and 168 in agriculture. The surface of this parish is broken and uneven; and the greater part of the soil is a whitish clay, on a tilly bottom.

There are the remains of a Roman military road still visible here; as likewise the ruins of Halydean, a strong fortification, once the residence of the family of Roxburgh; near this is a dike, which enclosed a deer park of five hundred acres, built without lime, and which has stood upwards of three hundred years.
