The origin of the name is debated. It probably doesn't have a Jewish origin based on the fact it is a noble name that is rather usual in Portuguese noble families in the Minho region of northern Portugal. Also the fact that the name goes back in parochial records to the time when the inquisition was at its highest level of influence; so no one would want any connection to Judaism.

There are records of the inquisition where men were forbidden to become priests because of a suspected Jewish great-great-grandparent and men and women were not married because of the same reason.
About the French origin, it is most likely but still quite improbable although it should be said that people with this surname married many times with people with the surname "Arantes" and that surname is almost surely of French origin.
It most likely is a toponymic from the Torre de Abreu near Valença in northern Portugal next to the Galician/Spanish border, since as early as the eleventh century there was a noble family that inhabited that place.
Abreu comes from the Germanic word, awi, which means 'to thank', 'give' or 'reward'.
- suebikingAbreu is a Portuguese language surname. The surname is particularly prevalent among those of Portuguese and Sephardic Jewish descent.
The source of the name is debated. The family name has a Portuguese form, and has been explained as being an ancient branch of the house of Normandy via the Countship of Évreux, France. It has also been linked to the name Abraham (Portuguese Abraão), the Biblical figure. Some argue that it is an abbreviation of the Portuguese phrase 'Abraham The Hebrew' (Portuguese Abraão O Hebreu).
- abreu87It's also a Catalan name. Probably a dialectal graphy for hebreu, 'Hebrew'.
