Doubtless of local origin compare Barfod near Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire. Barefoot was also an old spelling of Berfoid in the territory of Morham. Jock Barefoot, the Careston gillie, was said to have been hanged by Earl Bairdie (d. 1453) for daring to cut a walking-stick from the Covin Tree of Finhaven (Groome, Gazetteer). Lady Bairfoot raised an action against George Graham for receipting of a stolen bond, 1664 (Just. Rec., p. 85). Johnne Young, "schipard at Baiifute," in record, 1591 (Trials, I, p. 232).
