Contreras is a toponymic surname of Castilian origin, from the town of the same name in Burgos, Spain.
The name of a town comes from cuevas contrarias, meaning 'counter caves', perhaps due to the numerous caves in the mountains that surround it. Another theory attributes the origin of the name to the Celtiberian city of Kontrebia Leukada, located in the acropolis that rises next to the towns of Contreras and Carazo. It could also derive from the word encuentro (encounter), because precisely in Contreras were joined to Roman roads.
