Dufoor was originally Dufour, but was changed somewhere around the late 19th century or the early 20th century. There are two stories about how this name changed. One story says that a noble Frenchman called Count Dufour committed a horrible crime. He was banned from France and was forced to change his name so it wouldn't sound French and more Dutch or Flemish. The other story claims that the Dutch and/or Flemish didn't know the name Dufour and therefore wrote down Dufoor on the registration papers when a family with the name Dufour came to live in Belgium.

- bjorndufoor

Written as DeFoer, some individuals with the name DuFour became DeFoer after immigrating to the United States, where immigration workers at Ellis Island improperly recorded the name. The original "DuFour" is of the French language and translates to 'of the oven', implying perhaps that the family was well known for having skilled bakers. The name appears to have originated in francophone parts of Belgium.
