Tibbs Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(1) Bapt. 'the son of Theobald,' from the nick. Tebb or Tibb. (2) Bapt. 'the son of Isabella,' from the nick. Tib; compare the Yorkshire Till for Matilda and Tagg for Agnes. This solution is important as helping to the origination of Tib, the once familiar name for a female cat, Gib (Gilbert) standing for the male; v. Gibb. Tibby is still the pet-name of Isabella in the North of England; and a tib-cat still means a female cat in Yorkshire, where Isabella was once so popular as a girl's name. But while all this is true, there can be no doubt that Tib, for a cat's name, was originally masculine and ran side by side with Gib, without particular reference to sex. Originally, then, Tib for a cat was the nick, of Theobald. By degrees, however, Tib for Isabella ousted the popularity of Tib for Theobald. Besides, Theobald itself was becoming forgotten as a font-name. Hence the idea slowly crept in that Tib stood for the female cat, and had always done so. Of course the convenience of having a female name to correspond with Gib was obvious. In the Elizabethan and Stuart period Isabella was universally Tib (Tib for Theobald having disappeared), and Tib was still the lady cat. In Gammer Gurton's Needle Hodge says: 'And while her staff she took At Tyb her cat to fling.' Burton in his Anatomy of Melancholy, in a list of names, includes 'tall Tib, slender Sib'; while the 'Psalmof Mercie' a Commonwealth squib, says: '"So, so." quoth my sister Bab; "And kill 'um," quoth Margerie: "Spare none," cries old Tib; "no quarter," says Sib, "And hey for oar monarchic."'

No doubt there is an occult connexion between Tib and tabby.Stolen from Fore-bears
