Waterford for many centuries and from 1305 occurs frequently in records relating to those counties. They possessed, and probably built, the castles of Ballyhealy, Baldwinstown and Ballyteige in Co. Wexford. Robert Whitty was convicted of “high treason” in 1715-his crime being espousing the cause of the “Old Pretender”. Two Co. Ellen Whitty (Mother Mary Vincent of the Australian Sisters of Mercy) (1821-1892), pioneer nun, was also born in Co. Wexford.
In Ulster there are some families of Whittey (sic), presumably descendants of MacWhitty and Mawhitty householders who appear in the Hearth Money Rolls for Co. Antrim (1669).
