A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

From the lands of Wilton now in the parish of Hawick, Roxburghshire. John de Wilton appears as witness to several charters in the reign of William the Lion (APS., I, p. 67; REG., p. 78). Others of the name in the same reign are Roger de Wilton and Robert de Wilton (REG., p. 85, 86; Melros, 126,129; Kelso, 304). 1. de Wiltune witnessed a charter by Earl David, c. 1201-07 (LAC., 5), and in 1204 he appears as Johannes de Wiltun (ibid., 6). John, younger of Wilton, disputed the patronage of the church of Wilton between 1208 and 1211 (REG., p. 85, 86), and Roger de Wiltone witnessed charters by William the Lion between 1180 and 1200 (RAA., I, p. 41, 61, 65,166).

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

(English) belonging to Wilton (common) = 1 the Spring-Enclosure or-Farmstead [Old English wil(l, wyl(l, a spring, well + tún, enclosure, farm, &c.] 2 the Willow-Enclosure or -Farm- stead [Old English wilig, wylig, a willow + tún] Wilton, Wilts, the Anglo-Saxon Wiltún, Wyltún, which gave name to the county (Anglo-Saxon Wiltún scír), is evid. the ‘Well- Farm.’ As this Wilton is situated on the R. Wil(l)ey (Anglo-Saxon Wilig = Willow) it has unquestioningly been assumed, on the authority of Asser (... in monte qui dicitur Wiltún, qui est in meridiana ripa fluminis Guilou, de quo flumine tota ilia paga nominatin'.—Asserius, ‘de Rebus Gestis Ælfredi’), that the town took its name from the river; but the place occurs consistently in the A.-Saxon period as Wiltun or Wyltún (not Wiligtún); and I believe that the Welsh bishop was misinformed on this point. The Yorks Wiltons occur in Domesday-Bk. as Wiltune and Wiltone. Wilton, Heref., occurs as Wilton cum Castello a.d. 1204-5. Wilton, Cumb., was Wilton in the 13th cent. Wilton, Hawick, was Wiltun and Wiltona in the I2th cent.

Alan’ de Wilton.—Charter-Rolls, A.D. 1203-4.

Margery de Wiliton.—Hund. Rolls (Berks), A.D. 1274.
