From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Abraham,' from the nick. Abb, and diminutive Abb-ot. It is all but certain that the majority of our Abbotts, although bearing a conventual title, are thus descended. Abraham was a favourite name in the 13th century. William Abbod, Oxfordshire, ibid.
Adam Abbot, Huntingdonshire, ibid.
Juliana Abbot, Bedfordshire, ibid.
Margareta Abbot, Cambridgeshire ibid.
1700. Married — Edward Sanders and Anne Abbitt: St. Antholin, London.
G Alexander Abbot is in record as a witness in Glasgow c. 1290 (REG., p. 200). In the year 1306 Sir John Abbot, dean of Fife and Fothyrrife, was ordered by the bishop to sequestrate the fruits of the provostry of Aberdeen (Bain, II, 1822). Alexander Abbot witnessed an instrument of sasine in Leith in 1548 (Soltre, p. 113), and another Alexander Abbot signed the Band of Dumfries in 1570 (RPC., XIV, p. 66). It is probable that in some instances this name is a shortened translation of Macnab, which in Gaelic means "son of the abbot" (Mac an aba). Bardsley says that in England Abbot and Abbott are from Abb, diminutive of Abraham with additional diminutive suffix -ot, and that "it is all but certain that the majority of our Abbotts, although bearing a conventual title, are thus descended." As a diminutive of Abraham the name is found in Ireland at least as early as beginning of fourteenth century (Woulfe), but I have found no instance of such use in Scotland.
(Anglo-Latin-Greek-Syr.) Abbey-Father. [M. English abbot, abbod, O. English abbod; Latin abbas, as above, under Abbey]. (Anglo-French-Hebrew), a double diminutive of Abraham, q.v.; Abel, q.v.; or Absalom, q.v. [French diminutive suff. -ot].
(English) A member of an abbot's entourage; sometimes the lay abbot of a monastery who inherited his office; son of little Abb, a pet form of Abraham (father of multitudes); descendant of Abet or Abot, pet forms for Abel (breath or vanity).
See Ecclesiastical Surnames. A sobriquet most likely applied to such leaders of medieval pastimes as acted the Abbot of Unreason, the Abbot of Misrule, &c. Abet in Domesd. is a baptismal name.
So named from his office in the church; the chief ruler of an abbey—derived from the Syriac Abba, signifying father.
