An estate near the Peak, in co. Derby, possessed by a family of the same name in very early times.
(Northen French) Local A corruption of Aubigny, a town of France, in the department of Berry, whence the surname is derived; so D'Aubigny is corrupted to Dabney.
A location name in Derbyshire; in the Domesday Book, Habenai.
Abney: Amongst the old Derbyshire names now rare is that of Abney, which is taken from a place in the county. Willesley, or Wilsley, was for some centuries the seat of this family, and there they resided as far back as the reign of Henry VI.; one of the family was high sheriff of the county in 1656 (P.). The Abneys of Leicester in the 17th century, who on four occasions filled the office of mayor (Throsby's "Leicester"), probably hailed originally from the Derbyshire stock.
