Surname of great noble lineage of don Pelayo Fruela, the Diácono, Infante of Leon son of don Fruela II, King of Leon, who lived in the early part of the IX century. He took this name from a place called Acuña Alta situated a few miles from the Sierra of the Stars, in Portugal. In the XI century don Martín Vásquez de Acuña I, Count of Valencia, married the princess Maria of Portugal, daughter of the Infante don Juan, grandson of the King don Pedro I of Portugal. The family shield pictures nine blue wedges.
