This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Airey.' I cannot find the spot, but the family arose in Cumberland or Westmoreland. Almost every instance can be traced back to one or other county.
'Christopher Airay (1601-70), a pioneer of English logic, was born at Clifton in Westmoreland': Dictionary of National Biography.
'Henry Airay (c. 1560-1616), a puritan divine and author, was born at Kentmere, Westmoreland, being son of William Airay, the favourite servant of Bernard Gilpin': ibid.
