The name Hourani is directly related to the Auranitis (Hauran) Plateau, also spelled Hawran, Houran and Horan which is a volcanic plateau, a geographic area and a people located in southwestern Syria and extending into the northwestern corner of Jordan.

It gets its name from the Aramaic Hawran, meaning "cave land." In geographic and geomorphic terms, it extends from near Damascus and Mount Hermon in the north to the Ajloun mountains of Jordan in the south. It includes the Golan Heights in the west and is bounded there by the Jordan Rift Valley; it also includes Jabal al-Druze in the east and is bounded there by more arid steppe and desert terrains. The Yarmouk River drains much of the Hauran to the west and is the largest tributary of the Jordan River.

Overall the Land of Houran In Syria is in the cities of (Daraa, Busra, Quneitra, As-Suwayda) and in Jordanians cities of (Ar Ramtha, Irbid, Ajloun, Jerash).The volcanic soils of Hauran make it one of the most fertile regions in the area.

As for the family of Hourani now they basically related to that area and historically the official immigration to other places like Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia was only started in the In the latter half of the nineteenth century.

On the other hand, two stories confirm that the original family starter began with a reverse migration to Houran first, from Al-Hirah (an ancient city located south of al-Kufah in south-central Iraq) as they were from the Clan of "Mahameed" moved because of many wars with other clans there and Al Mahameed family are one of the oldest well known families in Daraa till this day, and the second story (which is weaker due to huge historical dating gap) says they are what left from Kindah (Old Arab kingdom back to the second century BCE which now called Saudi Arabia).

Add to that; for the majority of the family in Jordan, they mostly live in the city of "Irbid" in the north of Jordan and they have they embrace both Islam and Christianity by the percentages of 80%-20% respectively.
