Al-Rabadi Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
Al-Rabadi are one of Jordan's Christian families, and they belong to the Old Ghassanids Arab tribes. They live in Ajloun (a city in Jordan) and they have branched into another clan called Isa.
They also have relatives in Ermamen (near the city of Al-Salt), and in Ramallah in Palestine where they called themselves (Al-Ajlouni). As for the name's origins, there are two stories. The first (which is probably the most accurate) is that they took their name from "Qala'at Al-Rabad", which means Al-Rabad Castle, now called Ajloun Castle in the city of Ajloun, as they lived around it. The second story is taken from Rabat in Morocco, which they claim as their country of origin before migrating to Jordan.
- Aktham_tThe Rabadi surname is of Arabic and Spanish origin, it comes from a district outside the Spanish city of Cordoba during the period of medieval Islamic Iberia (al-Ribad) which in turn means 'the settlement outside the castle' (suburb in the same sense as the french faubourg). The family from this district were part of a rebellion against Sultan Al Hakam I and were expelled from the Iberian peninsula. A prominent Christian family in Jordan still goes by this name, primarily in the city of Ajloun where a castle that was historically in their possession bears their name (Rabadi Castle, also known as Ajloun Castle) and traces of the dynasty are also found in Palestine, Egypt, and Crete.
