A corruption, it is said, of the Anglo-Saxon personal name AEthelwald, but AElard occurs in Domesd. as a tenant of Earl Godwin in the time of the Confessor. "The name flourished in Winchelsea from the Conqueror's days." Collins. Cooper's Winchelsea.
