Albanna Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
The name has 2 sections, Al, which means 'the' and, banna, which literally translates to 'mason'. The two sections are separated by either a hyphen or a space, but some computer systems doesn't allow surnames to contain either and that's why we see them connected as if they were one word, so Al Banna, Albanna and Al-Banna are the same.
This is an Arabic surname, which means 'the mason' (many Arab surnames are derived from a profession or linked to a tribe; e.g. Al-Qahtani is a surname for a person who belongs to Qahtan tribe). The word banna can also mean 'creator', or 'constructor'.
In Yemen, the majority of people with this surname live in southern Ibb Governorate in the Bana Valley area and there are many people who also live in Dubhan area in Taiz Governorate. There are claims that the two groups were one and the Taizi people of this surname moved down from Ibb a few centuries back, but such a claim hasn't been validated or proved. There is also a claim that the Ibbi 'Al Banna' people are named as such because they live near a valley named 'Bana' valley, but there's also no evidence to prove that. There are no government statistics about the total population of the surname holders in the country of Yemen, but both Ibb and Taiz are highly populated and therefore there are chances that the number of surname holders is significant. Surnames are linked with tribal pride, therefore the Yemeni government doesn't reveal any information or statistics about the number of people by tribe in order to maintain a social cohesion. A family with a profession based surname could be or not be affiliated with a tribe.
The Yemeni Social Charge and Anthropologist Dr. Hamoud Al-Oudi talked and wrote a lot about how surnames in the Arab world are given and not chosen by their holders: the surname can be a tribe identity (e.g. Al-Qahtani, as mentioned above), or as a profession name (e.g. Al-Banna) or an animal name (Bashar Al-Assad - president of Syria who's surname translates to The Lion), or it could be also driven from the city/village where the surname holders are known to live (e.g. Al-Jawfi is a surname for people who are from a city with the name Al-Jawf). It's noted that unlike the other surname types, profession-based surname holders seem to be widely spread in many countries in the Arab world, and that's because the profession is not linked to a given tribe or city.
