(Scot.). The Scot. Christian name and surname may be (a) from the Latin Alban-us [alb-us, white], which was sometimes used to translate the Irish and Gaelic Fionn, of the same meaning; or (b) from the Eng, form of the Latin Albania, Gaelic Albany an old name of Scotland, (orig. of Pictland), which may mean 'white’ (conn, with Lat, alb-us, as above), but is poss. a pre-Aryan term signifying 'hill'; or (c) from Albannach, the Gaelic name for a Scot.
Originally the same as Albion-Britain; but after the Roman invasion the name was restricted to Scotland. Ultimately the appellation was still further limited to the somewhat extensive district of the Highlands, which includes Breadalbane, Athole, part of Lochaber, Appin, and Glenorchy. This district has frequently given the title of Duke to a younger son of the king, both before and since the union of the two crowns. As a surname it has been borne by several respectable families.
