It derives from the name Adalbert which originates from two Germanic words athala (nobility) and bertha (illustre), that is, identifies an individual of noble lineage, of shining nobility. The name, by imitation, was given, in medieval times, to children as an indication of nobility and then as a simple wish. The surname began to settle in the late Middle Ages thanks to the cult of numerous saints including St. Albert the Great.

The Alberti surname is Panitalian.

Alberto, although distributed throughout the peninsula, has a greater concentration in the north, where the influence of the Lombards first and the Franks later was greater.

Alberta, very rare, is specific to Foggia.

Albertacci, extremely rare, has a very small strain from Trieste and from Turin.
