Altschuler Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(from a place name) Jewish tradition associates this name, which means “old synagogue,” with refugees who fled from Provence in the early fourteenth century and settled in Prague. They had paid a large sum of money to the king to be allowed to take their synagogue with them, and they brought it piece by piece. After the expulsion of the Jews in 1542 many of the Altschuls settled in Poland, Lithuania, and Russia. Not all Altschuls are descendants of the settlers of Prague. As often happened with distinguished Jewish names, they were copied and imitated by many others.
