From the Arabic "al-barrada" - wall of small stones. One who lives near this landmark. Name of a small city in Veracruz, Mexico.

Found in Castile, Aragon, and Estremadura. Village of Alvare near Mondonedo has same origin. Originally from German "alvar" meaning a friend. Spanish form is "álvaro" and Alvarado found in other countries as "alvin" or "Alwin."

Comes from "albar" meaning whitish land with hills and high places.

Originates with some Gothic knights who helped don Pelayo in first battles with Moors. Knights built home in Secadura, political division of Laredo in Santander.
