It could be linked to a place name, called Amarelle, at least 4 exist in Galicia, but the majority of Amarelles are found in the Santa Comba area where an Amarelle village is also named.

Other possibility is the name is taken from a plant called amarelle, with yellow flowers, on the family of Amaryllidaceae.

It exist reference in written documents as old as XIV century and a coat of arms also exists suggesting the family has participated to the wars between Christian and Muslims in medieval Iberian peninsula.
