One hundred years ago a 'm' with a horizontal line above the letter meant doubling the letter. In my family tree the name turned from Amelung to Ammelung, as there was a blue line on the birth certificate and from this moment, state authorities claimed the name must be Ammelung, as there was a line above the 'm'.

One hundred years ago a 'm' with a horizontal line above the letter meant doubling the letter. In my family tree the name turned from Amelung to Ammelung, as there was a blue line on the birth certificate and from this moment, state authorities claimed the name must be Ammelung, as there was a line above the 'm'.
We never undid it, so many Ammelung are part of my family tree.
Amelung is a later version of Amelungen, the tribe of Dietrich of Bern. Dietrich is the German name of Theoderich the great, the Ostrogothic prince of Verona (which ancient name in DE is Welschbern), so the Amelungen are the Amelander, or Amaler - in the early medieval sagas.
